reader response:
Little Brother by Cory Doctorow
One of the things that I love most about science fiction is its ability to look at trends in contemporary society, extrapolate them to their most extreme ends, and then use those extremes to reveal a fantastic analysis of our world and the directions that we are heading down. Good science fiction is the type that makes you step back when you finish and take a closer look at our own lives. With Little Brother, Cory Doctorow has crafted just such a novel. The fact that this is a book whose intended audience is young alts makes it all the more powerful.
The story focuses on Marcus Yallow, a technically gifted teenager who, in between rounds of an alternate reality game he plays, finds new and interesting ways of harnessing technology to his needs. At the start of the book this is mostly by getting around the surveillance that his high school has in place for tracking students, ostensibly for their safety. All that changes once terrorists destroy the Bay Bridge and Marcus finds himself captive of the Department of Homeland Security. Tortured and interrogated for the small infraction of demanding a lawyer, Marcus is eventually released and sent home.
The home he returns to bares little resemblance to the one he had initially left. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is busy installing more and more RFID sensors, monitoring the internet, and surveilling everyone that falls outside their very thin definition of normal behavior. Outraged at his treatment at the hands of DHS, Marcus begins throwing monkey wrenches into the system in an attempt to point out to all the ludicrous nature of the surveillance state and its complete ineptness at tracking or catching any real terrorists.
The writing is clear and simple, particularly in the sections where Doctorow is explaining the technical ins and outs of a particular tool that Marcus is using. He offers up some of the most easily understandable descriptions of cryptography and Linux operating systems that I have come across, and does so in a way that makes what could be a dreadfully boring description very interesting and informative.
What really pushed this book over the cusp, for me, is that all of the applications that Marcus and the DHS use in their war against one another already exist. Anyone with some basic knowledge and tools could build a hidden camera locater. Anyone who wanted to could download and install the Linux build that Marcus employs throughout the book. Doctorow makes it even easier by including a Further Reading section at the end of the book where he points readers toward resources they could use to delve further into the worlds opened up in the book.
This is a book with everything. A fun and fast-paced story, realistic teenage characters, technology that piques the reader's interest, and a political message that desperately needs to be imparted to younger generations. The state of American democracy is in their hands and depends very strongly on the lessons that they receive. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether schools are as dedicated as they should be toward creating free thinking pupils who value the intent of the Constitution over blind dedication to the flag and whoever the current occupant of the White House may be. Part of the fascination of this book is its plausibility. Doctorow takes his plot to logical extremes, and all of the digital subversion the teens participate in is based in real technology and theory.
As with The Disreputable History, I was impressed with the way the author's argument was presented. While it's clear where Doctorow and his main characters stand on the issues, he presents the arguments of the other side and allows his characters to argue smartly, even eloquently for their side. We sometimes see the opposing characters as bumbling or moronic because they are seen through Marcus' eyes, but Doctorow doesn't take any shortcuts explaining his side of the argument.
It's also a great example of another trend I've been seeing in YA lately — authors giving their intended audience a great deal of credit. These books treat their teen audience as near-alts who think and decide for themselves, which is as it should be.
Doctorow also takes this opportunity to provide readers an ecation of security systems and computer programming. In what easily could have been some of the driest portions of the novel, Doctorow is able to give the reader some insight and knowledge, which may leave you curious to pursue more information on the inventors and security methods.
On its most superficial level, it functions as a fast-paced action novel that's impossible to put down. But you don't have to scrape very far beneath its surface to appreciate its truly subversive nature. For the more technologically inclined, it offers the tools to stage a techno-revolution, and for the more politically inclined, it offers the impetus for wanting to do so.
Doctorow is something of an Internet celebrity, having revolutionized the marketing of his novels through taking advantage of on-line distribution. He's grown as a writer since his debut in "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" and with "Little Brother," while he's writing for a young alt audience, he's found a new level of mature and assured writing that makes "Little Brother" one of the more remarkable and haunting books I've read this year.
I really liked this book. I especially liked all the nuts and bolts behind the actual story line and back history of the technology used. I feel like I read a good piece of fiction and learned about computers and the history of the internet and modern computers at the same time. Highly recommend!

During this semester, I』ve read three English novels. The first one is The Wizard of Oz. Here is the my reading feelings of the story. The Scarecrow wanted some brains, but on the way to the Emerald City, he thought out a way to cross the river. The Cowardly Lion wanted to be brave, but when they met the river, he carried other friends to jump across it. And the Tin Man wanted a heart, he said he couldn』t love, but he didn』t want to hurt any animal. In fact, they all have the things they want: the Scarecrow is clever, the Cowardly Lion is brave and the Tin Man is kind-hearted. His book tells us a story of how a little girl Dorothy goes back to her hometown when she is in another strange city. Dorothy is a little girl who lived with her aunt and uncle in Kansas. The weather there is very bad, sometimes there was a cyclone. When a cyclone came, people stayed under their houses. But one day a cyclone blows Dorothy』s house, with Dorothy and her dog Toto in it, to a country called Oz. In that city there are four witches and a very famous wizard—the Wizard of Oz. And Dorothy』s house just fell on the bad Witch of the East and killed her, so the people there were very happy. Dorothy took the witch』s red shoes and wore them. She wanted to go home to Kansas but she doesn』t know how to get there. So the Witch of North told her to go to the Emerald City to find the Wizard of Oz to help her.
Then Dorothy met the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, but they need help too. The Scarecrow wanted some brains, the Tin Man wanted a heard, and the Cowardly Lion wanted to be brave. So they all take the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. On the way to the Emerald City they met some difficulties, but they solved them successfully. After they met the Wizard of Oz, the wizard gave them another challenge—to kill the bad Witch of the West and they accept. During the way to the Witch of the West』s house, they were caught by the witch and Dorothy was requested to work for her. One day, when the witch tried to catch Dorothy』s red shoes, Dorothy threw some water on the witch by accident and the Witch of the West disappeared. Only water can kill her. So Dorothy went back to the Emerald City with her friends but they found the Wizard of Oz is not a real wizard, he is also a man came from Kansas, and he is just a conjurer. He wanted to go back to Kansas too. So he made a big balloon and prepared to go. But when the balloon is going to raise, Dorothy』s dog Toto jumped away to run after a cat, so Dorothy had to get Toto back and they were left in Oz.
Then Dorothy and Toto went and find the Witch of the South and the witch told them they can just use the red shoes on Dorothy』s feet, they』re a pair of magic shoes, they could take anybody go back to their home as soon as she said『East, west—home is the best!』After Dorothy said goodbye to her friends, she went back to her new home with her dog. It』s really a wonderful risk. Yes, no matter where we are, home is always the best place for us to rest or study. There are our parents here; there are also our favorite things here. At home, we feel safe, we feel comfortable, and we can relax ourselves. From this story, we can see Dorothy is a brave and kind-hearted girl. She killed the two bad witches in Oz; she helped the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion to go to the Emerald City to find the Wizard and get what they want. She solved problems when they met difficulties. It』s really not easy for such a little girl. We also learn that teamwork is important for us. When we are in trouble, we can ask our friends for help, and also, when our friends need help, we should go and help them. Just remember, more people, more power. It』s always better has more people to do a thing. Teamwork is really necessary in our lives. And we can see the Scarecrow is absolutely cleaver, he understands things, he can think, he learn quickly, and he suggested Dorothy to cut down a tree to cross the river. The tin man has a kind heart, he laughs, he cries, he loves, he feels sorry for people. The Cowardly Lion is really brave, he did a lot of brave things, he carried the friends to go across the river, and he wanted to find some food for his friends and so on. We should learn from them too. When we are in trouble, we should calm down, watch the things around carefully, and try to think out of a way to solve it, just like the Scarecrow. We also should be brave as we are in danger, we can』t be afraid, we should face the difficulty and try to go through it, just like the Cowardly Lion. And we should learn to love people, to feel sorry for people, to make more friends, to get on well with everyone around us, just like the Tin Man. Yes, we should learn how to get on with other people, we should help each other, we should be brave, we should love other people. Only love can make everything come true!

My impression of a book of " persons who keep watch in the wheat field " 「 wheat persons who keep watch of field " has a so great impact on me, making my thoughts and feelings very deep, I think that the form and content of this book are all very outstanding. The fifties in U.S.A. were a quite confused period, the dark cloud of World War II has not left yet, the smoke of gunpowder of cold war arises again. On one hand the development in science and technology is fast, and on the other hand, people lack the ideal, demoralized, under the great social background unable to change in oneself, live and mix shocking and shocking life.
" a generation of collapsing " appears , Halton is a member among them , he smokes and gets drunk, not to strive to make progress, but, he is still unlikely to rece to taking drug, gregarious stage, because in his bottom of heart , still have a beautiful and remote ideal all the time ---Do a " person who keeps watch in the wheat field ". A country here of our life, this era is ring the enormous change, everything is in the development with rapid change. In a sense, this is and really a bit alike in U.S.A. of the fifties.
The society is progressing constantly, people's concept is changing too, a lot of people begin to be vast and hazy, downhearted, they get to forget one's own ideal, do not have the first enthusiasm. We are a group of children living in new era, it is puzzled and worried to be already been used to naturally , but we should concentrate spirit and are certain about the front of our way , we should be people who have lofty ideals ambitious. If Halton does not have his pure ideal, then he will degenerate through to the end , it is his ideal that lets him live.
The ideal is the people' s beacon light, it is leading people to move towards future, move towards the light.

This story』s name is 「The little prince」. As it known to all, we will encounter a lot of difficulties, even hardships. Different people may have different ways to deal with them. After reading The Little Princess, I am deeply impressed by Sara』s way to deal with difficulties. The Little Princess was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a famous novelist and dramatist. Sara, the heroine of the novel, was born in a rich family. In order to get a better ecation, her father took her from India to London so that she could go to the best school. Because Sara was kind-hearted, generous and most of all—rich, she was loved by everyone. All went well until her father died in an accident. Everything changed completely. She didn』t understand why the teachers and classmates treated her so badly. Even the principal who used to be fond of her, made her work 16 hours a day. Sara』s miserable life began. When I finished reading the book, I was shocked by what the unimaginable pain Sara had suffered after her father』s death. She used to be a happy, worriless, and rich Princess, but now she was a lonely and poor servant. She had to work very hard without any rest but only had little food. Besides she had to enre the unfriendly and even rude ways that her classmates treated her. All teachers and students in the school looked down upon her. The most important fact is that Sara had lost the love and care of her parents. What a mighty pain! If you were Sara, could you stand such pain? Needless to say, an 11 years old girl, even if it were an alt, he might not put up with it. But to my surprise, Sara faced it bravely.
Despite of the torture of the principal and all those pressures above, she still was optimistic towards life. By reading this novel, I felt inspired and think much. When we meet such difficulties, what should we do? Some people always complain that the fate is unfair to them. Some people can』t sustain the hardships and choose to give up. Few of them even try to commit suicide because they lack the courage to overcome it. Compared with Sara—an eleven years old girl who can treat the pressure of life with optimistic spirit, these people』s performances are sounded so lamentable. Why can』t they make it?However, what impress me most are her characteristics and the thought of her 「being a real princess.」 This 「real princess」 does not mean luxury palaces, beautiful clothes and the apple of the others』 eyes, but being kind, generous and having good manners. It is unnecessary for 「a real princess」 to be strong in body, but she must be strong in will. Sara is a real princess in my heart all the time, whether she was rich and wore beautiful clothes in the classroom or she was cold and hungry in the attic, just because she had the good characters and kind heart. The story went on. Fortunately, a friend of Sara』s father found her and told her that her father left a great sum of money to her. I pray and believe that every good person in the world deserve a good result, and of course, we are the same。
