威爾斯這部發表於1898年的科幻小說《世界大戰》，被斯皮爾伯格搬上大熒幕。小說對外星人的外貌特徵進行了直接描寫，這也成了後來20世紀美國科幻小說「黃金時代」的一大特徵。

美國近代著名科幻小說家弗里蒂克·布朗曾寫過一篇就目前來說，堪為世界上最短的科幻小說。把它譯成現代漢語恰好是25個字，僅僅只有一句話：
地球上最後一個人獨自坐在房間里，這時，忽然響起了敲門聲……
盡管只有一句話，但它同樣具備了小說的特點。就小說的三要素而言，有人物（一個人）、有情節（一個人獨坐，聽到敲門聲）、有環境（僅有一人的地球上的某房間里）。科幻，重在科學幻想，其最為顯著的特徵就是：擅長誇張、製造懸念，給讀者設置自由而廣闊的聯想、想像等思維空間。這25個字促使讀者追究、探求的問題太多了——
地球上怎麼會只剩下一個人？其他人都到哪裡去了？是去往別的星球還是都死了？如果死了是因為什麼而死的？既然地球上僅剩一個人，那麼敲門的又是誰呢？是人類，是外星人，還是其它高智能的動物？這最後一個人是否去開門？開門後將看到什麼？如果是外星人，他們能夠通過語言來溝通彼此的情感嗎？……最後故事又將會怎樣發展？……總之，將會使每個讀者都產生多維而豐富的聯想和想像，有一百個讀者，就會有一百個關於「地球上最後一個人」的故事。
