艾薩克·阿西莫夫 美國著名科幻作家，他一生高產，著述頗豐，一生著述近500本，其中有100多部科幻小說，早已遠遠超過了「著作等身」的地步。是本世紀最頂尖的科幻小說家之一。曾獲代表科幻界最高榮譽的雨果獎和星雲終身成就「大師獎」。以他的名字為號召的「艾西莫夫科幻雜志」，是美國當今數一數二的科幻文學重鎮。

這位美國哥倫比亞大學的化學博士，波士頓大學的副教授，先是業余寫作科幻小說，1958年開始專職寫作，以他淵博的科學知識和豐富的想像力很快就成為引人注目的科學作家。其科幻小說的代表作為「機器人」系列和"基地"系列等，其他科學和科普著作有《生物化學簡史》、《化學簡史》、《碳的世界》、《月亮》、《海洋知識》、《空間知識》、《聖經入門》、《莎士比亞入門》等。阿西莫夫筆下的機器人，改變了原來科幻小說中機器人老套的奴隸工具或人類敵人的怪物面目，開始成為人類的親友，他在科幻小說中制訂的「機器人三定律」一直被奉為機器人科幻的經典，這定律幾乎成了以後科幻作家創作有關機器人的作品時必須遵循的法則。

【創作歷程】

阿西莫夫是美籍俄裔猶太人，他於1920年出生在俄國，3歲時舉家遷往美國，5年後取得美國國籍。阿西莫夫的父親在紐約布魯克林區開有數家糖果連鎖店，阿西莫夫則一邊讀書一邊幫忙照料店鋪。阿西莫夫的父親保守刻板，對子女要求嚴格，禁止阿西莫夫看暴力色情之類的報刊書籍，於是阿西莫夫選擇了科幻小說，並從9歲開始痴迷。

在阿西莫夫18歲那年，他將自己的處女作《宇宙瓶塞鑽》投給著名科幻作家兼編輯坎貝爾主編的科幻雜志，但是坎貝爾認為這篇作品「作為短篇太長，作為長篇則太短」，而且他「不喜歡慢騰騰的開頭，以及自殺的結局」。不過坎貝爾還是給了阿西莫夫以很大的鼓勵。結果在1939年3月，阿西莫夫終於發表了自己的第一篇作品《逃離灶神星》。

就在這同一年，阿西莫夫獲得了哥倫比亞學士學位，1941年他又獲得文學碩士。二戰中阿西莫夫曾入伍服役，戰後於1948年獲得博士學位，並進入大學教書。 阿西莫夫一生寫有大量的科幻作品，其中最主要的有兩大系列：「基地」系列和「機器人」系列。

「基地」系列為讀者展示了一個浩瀚龐大的宇宙畫卷。它的故事發生在遙遠的未來，其時人類已遍布250萬顆行星，人口達到1000 ，形成了一個真正的宇宙帝國。而這時一位社會心理學家卻根據推算得出這樣一個結論：帝國行將崩潰，人類社會將進入一個長達30000年的黑暗時期，所有的文明都將盪然無存；但是如果按照他的方法，通過建立基地的方法，則可以將人類文明的火種保留下來，並將黑暗時期縮短為1000年。於是，「物理學基地」和「心理學基地」相繼被建立，它們將完成保存並發展人類文明的艱巨任務……
