創作背景：

劉慈欣1999年起在雜志《科幻世界》上發表作品，此後接連創作了多個中短篇小說；在2006年1月發表短篇小說《山》時，許多讀者去信說希望他寫成長篇，於是劉慈欣就決定不再寫中短篇了；「有三顆無規則運行恆星的恆星系」這個構思他最初打算用來寫短篇，後來發現能寫成一部長篇小說。

於是把這和吳岩在《中國軌道》里描寫人們不顧一切地探索太空的歷史相結合，設定以「文革」時期為整個故事的背景，描述一些人物與外星力量間的接觸、以及華約和北約的冷戰；在一位出版人的影響下，他對原來的構思做了較大的變化，改為一個長篇的三部曲系列，敘述從20世紀60年代到五百年後人類的一段特殊歷程。
