還有一心得是養成看報紙雜志的習慣,本人推薦的是, , AND . 這些雜志的英語都是活生生的英語,內容包羅萬象，語法生動靈活．特別是西人自己常用的短句和悝語充斥其中．這在我們的課本是多多見的．
養成日常讀報的行為,不僅提高了英語,增加了詞彙量,更重要的是了解西人的思維方式.余以為,只有對了解他們的思想文化感興趣,才能順便學習好他們的語言.
如果功利性太強的話,學習中國學校的英語再好也不過是啞吧英語，劃勾英語而已． 我見過北外所謂的好學生和英美人士談的不過是些LOWEST DENOMINATOR之類的東西. 語言永遠是思維的確物質外殼， 一個沒有知識沒有內涵(Essence)的人，是蒼白無趣的．
本人長期閱讀上述報刊雜志（還有South China Morning Post)(SCMP 上的 Editorial 內容不錯．），雖仍然遜色於母語人士但比國內的身邊的人強不少．
同時， 我認為也注重中文的學習．常看中國的古籍，詩詞，和49年前的文學作品 （1949 後的是一片沙漠）． 好的外語能力的基礎其實是就是我們的母語．無奈現在的人都很浮燥，急功近利，無一欲畢其功於一役．故很難做到我說的這點．
